7 HVAC Maintenance Tips for Fall

Cooler temps in the mornings is your sign to check on your HVAC unit and prepare it for colder weather. Our HVAC specialists at Gustafson’s have compiled 7 maintenance tips to follow to ensure your HVAC unit is working at it’s full potential through the winter.

  1. Change air filter Replace your air filters monthly to ensure proper airflow, which prevents your system from working harder and reduces energy consumption.
  2. Clear debris from outdoor unit Remove any plants, debris, or stored items from around your outdoor condenser or heat pump unit to ensure proper function and prevent damage.
  3. Ensure all vents and registers are free of blockages Vacuum or wipe down all indoor vents and registers to clear away dust and debris, improving both airflow and indoor air quality.
  4. Inspect your ductwork for leaks Inspect your air ducts for any holes or leaks that could reduce efficiency. Perform a visual inspection in attics, basements, and crawl spaces, looking for gaps, tears, and loose tape, then perform a “feel test” by placing your hand over joints while the HVAC system is running to detect escaping air.
  5. Set your thermostat to an efficient temperature Set your thermostat to an appropriate temperature, like 68°F when heating, to save energy and use your system more efficiently.
  6. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for safety Test your detectors monthly by pressing the test button on each unit to ensure the alarm sounds. Replace their batteries every six months or manufacturer’s instructions.
  7. Schedule a professional tune-up A certified technician can perform a thorough check, clean components, lubricate parts, and ensure your heating system is working correctly before the cold weather hits.
